Dr. Vethanayagam (Associate Professor, University of Alberta) is a Respirologist and Asthma Specialist, and sees patients with different obstructive airways disorders – with a focus on Severe Asthma. She completed her MD and BSc at the University of Alberta. Following this, she trained in different provinces and health jurisdictions, therefore getting a glimpse of the vast differences in health care systems over this period of time. This included the Maritimes (Dalhousie University – Rotating Internship, worked in small communities as well as Halifax both in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia), Kingston, Ontario (Queen’s University – Internal Medicine), London, Ontario (University of Western Ontario – Respirology), followed by an Asthma Fellowship in Hamilton, Ontario (McMaster University).
Following a brief period of practice in Hamilton, she returned to Edmonton in 2003 where she continues to practice at the University of Alberta Hospital. The vast differences in access to care particularly in the large rural expanses which forms Edmonton’s referral base led to her developing Telehealth capacity for Respiratory Assessments (including asthma) over the past 13 years.
She has developed two inter-specialty clinics, the Edmonton Regional Severe Asthma Clinic, as well as a rare disorders genetic clinic (Edmonton HHT Clinic, where many individuals have pulmonary vascular malformations leading to strokes).
Outside of her work, she is involved with the broader sports community (Edmonton Track and Field Council / Athletics Alberta), and in this venue is involved with administrative and clinical assessments related to exercise-induced asthma. She is married with two teenage daughters, who keep her hopping!
